Really the only real place I could and do feel safe tends to be a clean and empty room. I guess it’s because in it there is nothing that is really outside of my control that can really disturb it. I’ve noticed that it could be any empty room really. I recall that recently I went with my stepmom to her grandma’s house - at that moment the reason why we went wasn’t very clear but she later told me that it was to make an exchange - so I pretty much had nothing to do and no one was around anyways. I decided to retreat to the living room and screw around with some kids' cash register thing so that I had something in my hands to fidget around with. But really, this wasn’t the room that brought me the peace that I was looking for so I went exploring around the house. Sure it was an empty room as a matter of fact practically everywhere in the house was empty except for the room that my stepmom and a couple of her relatives were in. I’ve been to this house so many times but I never really had free access to explore the rooms in the house so I decided to roam around. The whole house was pretty empty anyways, I guess it was set up this way to easily evacuate once my step moms grandma dies which is something even I - and many other people I’m positive - am sure is going to happen soon since all she does is sleep nowadays. One of the rooms was for some reason under construction but at least it was empty and it was here that I noticed I found my peace once I closed the door. I guess it’s because here I knew I was safe from anything that could be behind that closed door.
The place I did choose to model my safe place sculpture after was the main room from the David Lynch web series, Rabbits, which was recycled for use in his film Inland Empire which is more widely known that Rabbits itself. Really as long as it was an empty room is all that really mattered at that point. However what makes it different from other rooms that I could’ve modeled this room after, the room I was modeling it after still had a cool and dark color palette to it that was very calming to me. I supposed that if it is calming for me then it will most likely be calming to people who view my piece and that’s the point that I’m trying to put across. For my 5 joints or hinges, I used a tab and slot hinge to create the couch in the front corner of the room, a flange for the lamp in the far left corner, a crease L-brace to create the little shaft on the top of the door on the left, a scored bend to created the heater in front of the lamp, and the stacking layers to make the window.
