The story here is basically about Julian and Luca taking a trip up a hill when Luca suddenly falls to his death after stumbling.
For my color scheme, I wanted it to feel more natural to the environment surrounding the characters because at that point you’re more immersed into what is actually going on for the characters and what they are seeing. Things can feel and look dark but that’s just a matter of the perspective that it takes place from so really my focus making this piece was to make the images as natural as possible. When people tell me stories, a flash of images usually comes to mind and they are usually tinted with the emotion that is being told but in terms of actual and literal Point-of-view perspective, there was no emotional color. When I tell stories, of course according to the memory the colors of the memory are usually tinted with some type of emotion like happiness or sadness but at that moment, things weren’t like that, so here I am more concerned with what is actual.
The point being said here is that depending on how you choose to view this series of images is how you are going to remember them, because really memory is just a flash of images that are without a chosen feeling behind them emotionless. So if you choose to view this as sad you will remember it as being sad, but if you view it as nothing, you will remember it as feeling like nothing. It all depends on the viewer but inserting an emotion for the viewer themselves is very important to the story.
In terms of camera angles, for the first shot I went ahead and shot a straightforward two shot of Julian and Luca walking up the hill. Julian is dominant in this shot and is followed by Luca so the story I am trying to tell here is that it was Julians idea to make this trip and he is leading the way for Luca who isn’t far along behind but is still a little far but Julian doesn’t notice this. In my second shot, I decided to shoot a closeup of Luca losing his balance. My wide angle lens distorts reality and the story here is that when you don’t expect something to happen, then your reality shakes. It is from Luca’s perspective here that he loses his balance on the hill and stumbles and he is going to fall to his death.
In the third shot, Julian looks back and reaches out but he is far away. Again the amazing thing about the wide angle lens is how it can distort reality and make things seem like they are far but close at the same time or the opposite depending on your own interpretation. However what I positioned the camera to do was to make just the idea of being able to save Luca at this point seem far away so he reaches out. In my fourth shot, I just took a straightforward shot of Luca on the ground below. This was blurred because from Julians perspective, he is in denial so the fact that Luca is dead is a blurry idea. However in the final shot, once he sees Luca’s dead body up close, Luca is now the focus and Julian, though still in denial, is seeing that Luca is really dead. Because Julian is in denial, Luca is close to us but Julian according to the camera lens seems far away, because though we have accepted Luca’s death, Julian has not and that fact is still far from him.
In terms of clothing, I must confess that I thought very little of that and just stuck to whatever my subjects were wearing. However, the blue and red could represent a contrast of ideas. Red is a strong power and a dominant one. Red is a leader and Red leads Blue to the top of the hill. Red is extroverted. Blue is a thoughtful and introverted color, it’s more concerned with the internal view of things and when Red pushes Blue into the external world, this is unfamiliar to Blue and Blue falls.
